Taurine is an amino acid converted from sulfur-containing amino acids, also known as taurotic acid, taurine, taurine, and taurine. Taurine is widely distributed in various tissues and organs of the body, mainly in the free state in the interstitial fluid and intracellular fluid. Taurine was first found in bull bile, but it has long been considered to be a non-functional metabolite of sulfur-containing amino acids. Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid in animals, but it is not a component of proteins. Taurine is widely distributed in the form of free amino acids in human and animal brain, heart, liver, kidney, ovary, uterus, skeletal muscle, blood, saliva and milk, with the highest concentration in pineal gland, retina, pituitary gland and adrenal gland. In the mammalian heart, free taurine accounts for as much as 50% of the total free amino acids.
Application&Function
Taurine is an organic osmotic regulator, which not only participates in the regulation of cell volume, but also provides the basis for the formation of bile salts. It also plays an important role in the modulation of intracellular free calcium concentration. Although taurine is a specific amino acid that is not incorporated into proteins, taurine is the most abundant amino acid in brain, retina, and muscle tissues. Taurine is widely used in central nervous system function, cytoprotection, cardiomyopathy, renal insufficiency, renal dysfunction and retinal nerve injury. Taurine is found in almost all ocular tissues. Quantitative analysis of extracts from rat eye tissues showed that taurine was the most abundant amino acid in the retina, vitreous, lens, cornea, iris, and ciliary body. Many studies have found that taurine is an active substance that regulates the normal physiological activities of the body. It has a wide range of biological functions, such as anti-inflammation, analgesia, maintaining the osmotic pressure balance of the body, maintaining normal visual function, regulating cellular calcium balance, lowering blood glucose, regulating nerve conduction, taking part in endocrine activities, regulating lipid digestion and absorption, increasing cardiac contraction capacity, improving the body's immune ability, enhancing the antioxidant capacity of cell membrane, protecting myocardial cells and so on.
