DL-Mandelic acid, with the chemical formula C8H8O3, has a molecular weight of 152.15 and a CAS number of 90-64-2. It is a white rhombic flaky crystal that discoloration and decomposition when exposed to light. It has a melting point of 119 ° C, a density of 1.30g /cm³, and is readily soluble in ether, ethanol and water .

In a reaction flask equipped with a stirrer and a thermometer, add 350mL of water and 100g (2.0mol), stir until dissolved, then add 212g (2.0mol) of freshly distilled benzaldehyde (2), and under vigorous stirring, add about 300mL of saturated solution. Control the reaction temperature at 30-35ºC. Add it up within 20 minutes (it can be cooled in an ice water bath). After adding, stir and react for 0.5 hours. After standing still, the orange-red oily substance on the upper layer was separated out, and about 220g of crude almond nitrile (3) was obtained. Mandelic acid (1) : Equipped with a stirrer. In the reaction flask of the thermometer, add 300mL of concentrated acetic acid and heat it to around 60ºC. Then, add 220g of the above-mentioned almond nitrile (3) in batches (note that the reaction should be carried out in a fume hood). After the reaction is stable, it is heated and reacted in a boiling water bath for 2 hours. Cool and leave overnight. The solid precipitated by suction filtration (containing ammonium chloride). Extract the solid substance twice with ether (400mL×2), and concentrate the ether solution to approximately 1/3 of its volume. Cool and precipitate solids. Vacuum filtration and drying were carried out to obtain 135g of mandelic acid (1). The yield is 44%. Recrystallization with hot water, mpa 121-123ºC. There are also reports.
Purpose
It is used as a raw material and intermediate for pharmaceuticals, dye intermediates, etc.
