Due to the fact that flukes and tapeworms do not use GABA as a neurotransmitter and lack Cl channels controlled by glutamate, this class of drugs is ineffective against them. The peripheral neurotransmitter of mammals is acetylcholine. Although GABA is distributed in the central nervous system, it is relatively safe to use due to its difficulty in crossing the blood-brain barrier and minimal impact.
The mechanism by which this type of drug affects parasite reproduction is not yet clear, but it can reduce tick egg laying, cause abnormal egg shape in ruminant nematodes, and make filamentous nematodes (male and female) infertile.
The pharmacokinetics of ivermectin vary significantly depending on the breed, dosage form, and administration route. Taking plasma half-life as an example, intravenous injection of 300 μ g/kg into cattle and sheep resulted in a lower plasma concentration in sheep due to their larger apparent distribution volume, although the difference in t1/2 was not significant (2.8 days and 2.7 days, respectively). Ivermectin is excreted rapidly in dogs (t1/2=1.6-1.8 days). The half-life of pigs is up to 4 days
