The cross-linking between elastin molecules is more complex than that of collagen. A network structure rich in elasticity is formed through cross-linking involving lysine residues, and the cross-linked network formed by covalent bonds can generate elasticity through changes in configuration. The hydrophobic amino acid content in elastin is as high as 95%. When elastin is initially synthesized, it is a water-soluble monomer with a molecular weight of 70000, called tropo elastin. During modification, some proline is hydroxylated to form hydroxyproline. After the original elastin is secreted from the cell, some lysine is catalyzed by oxidase to be oxidized into aldehyde groups, and then condensed with the ε - amino groups of other lysine to form pyridine derivatives, called streptones.
