Atovaquone is a naphthalene compound, a hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, belonging to the ubiquinone analogue and also an antigen parasite mitochondrial electron transfer inhibitor. It inhibits the action of cytochrome bc (1) complex by interacting with Rieske iron sulfur protein and cytochrome b in the ubiquinone oxidation pocket.
It is also under investigation as a treatment for malaria and AIDS-associated toxoplasmosis.
