Anti Gram negative bacterial infection: Polymyxin exhibits strong antibacterial activity against various Gram negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Enterobacteriaceae. These bacteria typically have high resistance to other antibiotics.
2. Treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections: In hospital environments, multidrug-resistant bacterial (MDR) infections are a serious problem. Polymyxin, due to its unique mechanism of action, can effectively combat these difficult to treat pathogens and is commonly used to treat infections caused by ESBL (Extended Spectrum β - Lactamase) producing bacteria and carbapenemase producing bacteria.
3. Targeting specific site infections: Polymyxin is commonly used to treat severe lung infections, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by mechanical ventilation. It is also used to treat complex urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections, and abdominal infections.
4. Local application: Polymyxin can also be used as a local anti infective medication for preventive treatment after burns, trauma, or surgical procedures. When used topically, it can directly act on infected skin or tissue, reducing systemic side effects.
5. Mechanism of action: Polymyxin destroys the integrity of bacterial cell membranes, causing leakage of cellular contents and ultimately leading to bacterial death. Due to its different mechanism of action from traditional antibiotics, it is still effective against multiple drug-resistant bacteria.
Polymyxin may cause some side effects during use, such as nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Therefore, when using polymyxin for treatment, the patient's kidney function and nervous system status should be closely monitored to ensure safety.
