Omeprazole (CAS number: 73590-58-6) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) with the chemical name 5-methoxy-2- [[(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-2-pyridyl) methyl] sulfonyl] -1H-benzimidazole. The appearance is a white to off white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, and easily soluble in ethanol and alkaline solutions. This drug effectively reduces gastric acid secretion by inhibiting gastric wall cells and is widely used in the treatment of gastric acid related diseases. Its stability is affected by pH and needs to be stored away from light and moisture. The formulation often uses enteric coating technology to ensure efficacy.

Application&Function

Omeprazole irreversibly blocks the proton pump of gastric wall cells, significantly inhibiting basal gastric acid and stimulated gastric acid secretion, and its effect can last for more than 24 hours. Clinically used to treat gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, reflux esophagitis, and Zollinger Ellison syndrome (gastrinoma), and often combined with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. In addition, it can also prevent gastric mucosal damage caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Rapid onset of action, peak blood drug concentration 1-2 hours after oral administration, metabolism dependent on liver CYP2C19 enzyme, individual differences should be noted.
