Efavirenz (Efavirenz, CAS number: 154598-52-4) is a non nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) with the molecular formula C14H9ClF3NO2 and a molecular weight of 315.675. This compound is a white to off white crystalline powder with a melting point of 139-141 ° C. It is easily soluble in  and ethanol, but has poor water solubility. Its structure contains a chiral center. Efavirenz needs to be stored at low temperatures (<0 ° C) to avoid degradation and has high lipid solubility.

Application&Function

Efavirenz is mainly used to treat HIV-1 infection by selectively inhibiting viral reverse transcriptase (Ki=2.93 nM) to block virus replication. It can significantly reduce viral load when used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs. In addition, studies have shown that Efavirenz is still effective against certain drug-resistant HIV strains and has no significant inhibition on mammalian polymerases, indicating high safety.
