Pharmacological effects of amantadine
Amantadine is a weak NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist that can increase dopamine release and block dopamine reuptake. It also has an anticholinergic effect similar to that of benzophenone and may promote the release of norepinephrine from nerve endings in the brain. These effects have shown certain therapeutic effects of amantadine in treating movement disorders in Parkinson's disease, especially for dyskinesia that occurs after long-term treatment with dopaminergic drugs.
