Alpha-lipoic acid is a pale yellow powder-like crystal with almost no odor. It has a low solubility in water, approximately 1 g/L at 20°C. It is soluble in 10% NaOH solution and aliphatic solvents. It is readily soluble ,ethanol and ether.Lipoic acid is also known as α -lipoic acid.Lipoic acid has a chiral center, and thus it has two configurations, R and S.Natural lipoic acid is a white crystal with only R configuration. Only R-configured lipoic acid can covalently bind to lysine residues through amide bonds to function as a coenzyme.The artificially synthesized lipoic acid is a mixture composed of equal proportions of R and S configurations. It is a pale yellow powder-like substance and is highly soluble in lipid solvents.

Antioxidants and as coenzymes of enzymes such as pyruvate dehydrogenase and glycine decarboxylase, exogenous lipoic acid is reduced by two or more intracellular enzymes. This reduction form affects the process by which cells eliminate free radicals. Increase the synthesis of glutathione and regulate the activity of transcription factors. It reduced the phagocytic activity of myelin in macrophages.
Vitamin drugs can stimulate fat metabolism. It is used for the treatment and therapeutic health care of acute and chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, hepatic coma, fatty liver, diabetes and other diseases
