The drug action of Hydroxyzine:
1.Antiallergic effect: Hydroxyzine can inhibit serotonin release caused by choline, thereby reducing allergic reactions. For example, in pre processed bladder sections, Hydroxyzine (10 μ M) can inhibit choline (10 μ M) - induced serotonin release by 34%, while 1 μ M and 0.1 μ M Hydroxyzine inhibit by 25% and 17%, respectively.
2.Immunomodulatory effect: Hydroxyzine can inhibit the development and severity of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), an autoimmune disease similar to multiple sclerosis in humans. In addition, it can also reduce the activation of brain mast cells associated with EAE.
3.Drug metabolism effects: Hydroxyzine can alter the transport and metabolism of certain drugs. For example, it can increase the transport of etoposide in the ileal inversion sac and reduce its excretion in the duodenum and ileum.
