Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum semi synthetic penicillin that has inhibitory effects on Gram positive bacteria, with better effects on Streptococcus pyogenes and Enterococcus, and poorer effects on other bacteria. It is ineffective against penicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Mainly used to treat various infections caused by sensitive bacteria. The main mechanism of its drug action is to exert bactericidal effect by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Specifically, ampicillin can bind to the key enzyme in bacterial cell wall synthesis, penicillin binding proteins (PBPs), thereby interfering with the cross-linking of peptidoglycans, causing damage to the integrity of the cell wall and ultimately leading to the loss of bacterial resistance and death.

Application&Function

Ampicillin is a beta lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class and the first broad-spectrum penicillin. As a beta lactam antibiotic, it mainly exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. The bacterial cell wall is crucial for maintaining the morphology and survival of bacteria. Ampicillin can hinder the cross-linking of peptidoglycans during cell wall synthesis, causing bacterial cell wall defects and leading to bacterial expansion, rupture, and death under osmotic pressure.
Commonly used for preventing and treating bacterial infections in the respiratory tract, urinary tract, middle ear, sinuses, gastrointestinal tract, bladder, and kidneys caused by sensitive bacteria. In addition, it can also be used for the treatment of severe infections such as simple gonorrhea, meningitis, endocarditis, and salmonellosis through oral, intramuscular, or intravenous infusion.
