Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic mainly used to treat various bacterial infections, especially Gram positive bacterial infections that are resistant or have poor efficacy against other antibiotics. Vancomycin works by inhibiting the second stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds with high affinity to the end of the precursor peptidoglycan of the sensitive bacterial cell wall, blocking the synthesis of high molecular weight peptidoglycan that constitutes the bacterial cell wall, resulting in cell wall defects and killing bacteria. This mechanism enables vancomycin to have strong antibacterial effects against various Gram positive bacteria, especially against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Enterococcus.

Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic, and its pharmacological effects mainly include the following aspects:

Inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis
By binding with high affinity to the propargyl alanine at the end of the precursor peptide of the sensitive bacterial cell wall, the synthesis of peptidoglycan is blocked, leading to cell wall defects and killing bacteria.
Specifically targeting the second stage of cell wall synthesis, it interferes with the formation of cell walls in susceptible bacteria.

Change cell membrane permeability
It can enhance the permeability of cell membranes and further disrupt the physiological functions of bacteria.

Inhibition of ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis
Selective inhibition of bacterial RNA synthesis affects its metabolic processes.
