Orlistat is a non central nervous system acting obesity treatment drug. Only acting on the gastrointestinal tract, it inhibits the lipase in the gastrointestinal tract, prevents the hydrolysis of triglycerides into free fatty acids and monoacylglycerols, reduces the absorption of dietary fats (triglycerides) by the intestinal mucosa, and promotes the excretion of fats from the body. Lipase is an enzyme necessary for the breakdown of fat in the gastrointestinal tract. This product can bind to serine residues of gastric and pancreatic lipase, inactivating lipase and preventing it from breaking down fat in food into free fatty acids, inhibiting the utilization and absorption of fat. Orlistat capsules are long-acting and potent specific gastrointestinal lipase inhibitors, which exert therapeutic effects by forming covalent bonds with the active serine sites of gastric lipase in the stomach and pancreatic lipase in the small intestine, inactivating the enzymes. Inactivated enzymes cannot hydrolyze fats (mainly triglycerides) in food into absorbable free fatty acids and monoacylglycerols.
