Atorvaquinone is a synthetic naphthoquinone based antiparasitic and antimicrobial drug, with the chemical name 2- [4- (4-chlorophenyl) cyclohexyl] -3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone. Its molecular weight is 366.84. This compound is a yellow to orange crystalline powder that is insoluble in water but easily soluble in organic solvents such as DMSO. Atorvaquinone has the characteristics of high bioavailability and low toxicity. It mainly works by inhibiting the mitochondrial electron transfer chain (complex III) of pathogens, and is clinically used to treat and prevent specific infectious diseases.

Application&Function

Atorvastatin is mainly used to treat pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii, especially for patients who are intolerant to sulfonamide drugs. In addition, it can also be used in combination with other drugs (such as chloroguanidine) to treat or prevent malaria (such as Plasmodium falciparum infection). Its mechanism of action is to selectively inhibit mitochondrial electron transfer in parasites or microorganisms, block energy (ATP) synthesis, and lead to pathogen death. Atorvastatin has good oral absorption, wide tissue distribution, and few side effects, making it an important anti infective drug for immunocompromised patients (such as HIV infected individuals).
