Monensin, also known as "rumensin", is a widely used feed additive in ruminants. Originally secreted by Streptomyces cinnamonis, it has the functions of controlling the proportion of volatile fatty acids in the rumen, reducing protein degradation in the rumen, lowering dry matter consumption in feed, improving nutrient utilization efficiency, and increasing animal energy utilization efficiency. The molecular formula is C36H61O11 and the molecular weight is 670. The premix is a yellow brown particle or powder.

Application&Function

Monensin is a polyether ionophore antibiotic mainly used for preventing and treating coccidiosis in chickens, lambs, calves, and rabbits, as well as promoting the growth of ruminants. Monensin can affect the ion balance of the parasite, causing it to rupture and die. It acts on the second day after infection, and the coccidian develops into the first generation of schizonts. Monensin can also increase rumen  production, improve feed utilization efficiency, and increase weight gain rate. Monensin has a strong effect on Gram positive bacteria (especially Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, and Bacillus subtilis) and Streptococcus suis, but its effect in animals is weak and it is not suitable for antibacterial use.
