Flavonoids belong to polyphenolic substances. They possess various important biological activities, including tumor growth inhibition and chemoprevention effects. Apigenin is a plant flavonoid and is commonly used to inhibit ornithine decarboxylase activity and skin tumors. Apigenin is widely distributed in various herbs, including Achillea, Chamomilla, Pteridium, Mentha, Salix, Salvia, Silybum, Thymus, and Rubiaceae.
Application&Function
A plant flavonoid was found to inhibit cell proliferation by arresting the cell cycle at the G2/M phase. The inhibition of growth through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis seems to be related to the induction of p53. The inhibitory effect on tumor promotion might be due to the inhibition of kinase activity and the resulting suppression of oncogene expression. The study also reported the inhibition of DNA re-ligation catalyzed by topoisomerase I and the enhancement of gap junction communication between cells by inhibiting PMA-mediated tumor promotion. It was also reported that the inhibition of DNA re-ligation catalyzed by topoisomerase I and the enhancement of gap junction communication between cells were achieved by inhibiting protein kinase C and the resulting suppression of oncogene expression.
