Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal drug mainly used to treat superficial fungal infections such as skin, mucous membrane, and interphalangeal ringworm caused by various fungi.
Clotrimazole exerts its antifungal effect by inhibiting the synthesis of fungal cell membranes. It can specifically bind to ergosterol on the fungal cell membrane, thereby interfering with the integrity and function of the cell membrane, leading to fungal cell death. In addition, Clotrimazole also has certain immune regulatory effects, which can enhance the host's resistance to fungal infections.
Application&Function
Mechanism of action and indications
Mechanism of action: Clotrimazole is an imidazole antifungal drug that can act on the fungal cell membrane, causing the leakage of cellular contents and exerting antifungal effects.
Indications:
Skin fungal infection: It can treat skin fungal diseases caused or sustained by fungi such as dermatophyton, such as superficial fungal infections such as tinea corporis and tinea pedis in livestock.
Deep fungal infection: It has a good effect on visceral pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Sphingosporum, and Histoplasma. It can be taken orally to treat systemic and deep fungal infections, such as aspergillosis, Candida albicans, Cryptococcus, Sphingosporosis, Histoplasma (dogs, cats), and fungal sepsis. However, for severe deep fungal infections, it is advisable to use amphotericin B in combination.
Other: Clotrimazole is also effective against certain Gram positive bacteria and vaginal trichomonas.
