Neomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that interferes with the initiation and elongation stages of protein synthesis by irreversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, leading to bacterial death. It has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria (such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteobacter) and some Gram positive bacteria (such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus), but has weaker effects on Streptococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus, and anaerobic bacteria.
Application&Function
Clinical application
Intestinal infection: used to treat intestinal infections caused by sensitive bacteria.
Preoperative intestinal preparation: Using it before colon surgery can reduce the number of intestinal bacteria and lower the risk of postoperative infection.
Liver coma adjuvant therapy: By inhibiting intestinal bacterial metabolism, reducing absorption, and improving symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy.
Drug resistance and cross resistance
Bacterial resistance to Neomycin sulfate is common, and there is partial or complete cross resistance with aminoglycoside antibiotics such as streptomycin, kanamycin, and gentamicin.
Other functions
Inhibition of phospholipase C (PLC): may affect bacterial metabolism and signaling pathways.
Molecular biology applications: as screening markers (such as NeoR gene) for constructing stable transfected cell lines.
The above content integrates its antibacterial mechanism, clinical indications, and related characteristics, covering its main roles in treatment and scientific research fields.
