Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by fermentation of Streptomyces kanamyceticus. Its chemical structure is a polyhydroxy compound formed by the combination of an amino cyclic alcohol and an amino sugar. Its sulfate form (kanamycin sulfate) is a white or off white crystalline powder that is easily soluble in water and has good stability. Kanamycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has inhibitory effects on various Gram negative bacteria and some Gram positive bacteria. However, its clinical application is limited due to its ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Currently, it is mainly used for the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections and laboratory research.
Application&Function

Kanamycin exerts bactericidal effects by irreversibly binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, interfering with protein synthesis. It has strong activity against mycobacterium tuberculosis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and other gram-negative bacteria, and has been widely used to treat severe intestinal infection, tuberculosis and sepsis. However, due to its obvious ototoxicity (damaging hearing and vestibular function) and nephrotoxicity, it is now commonly used as a second-line drug or in combination with other antibiotics, and strict monitoring of blood drug concentration is required. In addition, kanamycin is commonly used in molecular biology for screening transgenic cells (such as kanamycin resistance gene screening).
