Thymol (chemical name: 5-methyl-2-isopropylphenol) is a natural monoterpene phenolic compound, mainly found in essential oils of plants such as thyme and blackcurrant. This compound is a white crystalline solid with a strong aromatic characteristic odor and a melting point of 48-52 ° C. As an important food additive and pharmaceutical intermediate, thymol is widely used in food preservation, daily chemical sterilization, and drug preparation due to its excellent antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Its CAS registration number is 89-83-8, molecular formula C10H14O, which meets the requirements of pharmacopoeia standards such as USP/EP/CP, and is usually tested for purity using HPLC method (≥ 99%).
Application&Function

Thymol has multiple biological activities: 1) Broad spectrum antibacterial effect, significantly inhibiting pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, commonly used in mouthwash and disinfectant formulations; 2) Strong antioxidant properties, can delay oil rancidity, as a natural food preservative (EEC No.E307); 3) Used in the pharmaceutical field for the synthesis of cough suppressants, expectorants, and antiparasitic drugs; 4) Used as a plant-based fungicide and feed additive in agriculture. Its safety has passed FDA GRAS certification and has irreplaceable application value in the food, pharmaceutical, and daily chemical industries.
