Melanotan (MT)-II is a synthetic receptor agonist of melanocortin. It is an injectable polypeptide hormone that can promote tanning. Melanotan (MT) -II is an effective non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist with high affinity for the MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5 receptor subtypes, and is involved in regulating many physiological systems, such as the pigment system, energy homeostasis, sexual function, immune system, inflammation and cardiovascular system.

Application&Function

Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of α -melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), which mainly functions by binding to melanocortin receptors (such as MC1R, MC4R, etc.) and has the following effects:
Promote the production of melanin in the skin
By activating the MC1R receptor, it stimulates melanocytes to produce melanin, allowing the skin to naturally tan and reducing the risk of ultraviolet (UV) damage. Clinical studies have shown that subcutaneous injection of MT-II can significantly increase skin pigmentation (Br J Dermatol, 2006).
Enhance sexual function (potential effect)
Activation of the MC4R receptor may improve sexual desire disorders. Some studies have shown that it has a regulatory effect on erectile dysfunction (ED) in men and frigidity in women (J Sex Med, 2008).
Appetite suppression and weight management
Appetite is inhibited through the central MC4R pathway. Animal experiments have shown that it can reduce food intake, but human data are limited and further verification is needed (Peptides, 2011).
Anti-photosensitivity protection
It provides photoprotection for patients with erythroderma (such as erythropoietic protoporphyria) and reduces photoallergic reactions (Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed, 2015).
